BMI Sponsor Tracking for 2009

Post By ConnectMarketing in Sponsorship

The results of the BMI Sponsor Tracking for 2009 have just been released and football is still the number 1 sponsorship platform in Nigeria by far. Does this mean this is the only thing Nigerians are passionate about? How can we begin to develop other platforms and passion points beyond football?

Football is not the only thing Nigerians are interested/passionate about however, Its the cheapest activity to engage in and since a larger proportion of Nigerians are poor, it logically accounts for the mass interest. However, i believe many of the organisations with the clout to sponsors any property are just selfish and unwilling to really invest. Its always a case of make quick returns as against really sponsorship with a long term effect.

I see it as some form of intellectual laziness on the part of the owners of these alternative sports and also some of our marketing people.

Until sponsors are willing to create, develop and invest and build alternative platforms apart from football it will remain No.1 The parochial, short term and narrow minded focus of sponsorship and sponsors in Nigeria is just a reflection of where the minds of those that make decisions reside. It will change when we have bold, adventurous and determined platform builders.

It is sad, just sad to narrow our social and recreation to football in expense of other sports; the sports journalist have a great role of work to do to carry other sports we have now spinning money for generations..e.g baseball. America in line also have taken football to be complete has world leader. good example for Nigeria and Nigerian sport journalist.

We might say its the laziness, we might say its the selfishness of the sponsors but we need look critically at the appeal of football. There's such an aura that surrounds it. There's a fire, a passion, a constant invitation to heights of pure genius. You know when you consider what Messi does with the ball or even Kanu in some of his better moments, then you wouldn't find it difficult to understand where Nigerians are coming from. We must therefore seek out that sport, art or any other thing that has the minutest potential of drawing people in as much. For India it's cricket and their movies. For the USA, it's basketball, baseball, American football and their movies. For us what would it be? I think here is where the real work for Dora Akunyili comes in. Are we trying to re-brand Nigeria? Well, Nigeria never had a good brand before and as such it should just be a pure Branding process not re-branding as we have erroneously labelled it. Well, where she comes in is that our movies i
